Itinerary

Day 1: PICK-UP IN ACCRA & TRAVEL TO KAKUM

We pick you up at either the Kotoka International Airport or your hotel in Accra and drive west along the coast, stopping to eat at either a local Ghanaian restaurant or a beach resort. At Cape Coast we turn north and head toward Kakum National Park.

Upon arrival at our destination, we eat lunch at the cafe before starting of visit at the visitors’ centre. After that, we walk the famous canopy walk, which features six tree-top platforms that allow for viewing the forest from 30 meters above the forest floor.

  • Kakum National Park – This large, 375 square kilometre tropical rainforest has been protected since 1931 and is famous for its 350-metre canopy walkway that gives visitors and unrivaled treetop view of the forest, cocoa farms, and bamboo forests. The canopy walk reaches height of up to 50 metres above the ground. The walk takes 2-3 hours to complete and is led by a knowledgeable guide. Excellent walking tours of the park are also available. Visitors will have a chance to observe indigenous species such as the Diana monkey, the giant bongo antelope, the yellow-backed duiker, and the African elephant. Over 266 species of birds can be found in the park, including the rare African Grey Parrot and over nine species of the hornbill. The Kakum Conservation Area Tree House is designed to allow visitors a chance to see elephants feeding on fallen fruit.

Accommodations for the night will be at either a nice beach resort hotel along the coast or at Hans Cottage Botel.

Day 2: KAKUM NATIONAL PARK & MONKEY FOREST RESORT

After a wonderful dinner and a great night of sleep, we head back to the tropical forest.

  • Kakum National Park – we see of of this natural treasure and take guided hikes for seeing medicinal plants and the Sun Bird Trail.
  • Monkey Forest Resort – this privately-run facility allows visitors to get an up-close view of many species of primates, plus crocodiles, civic cats, turtles.

We will eat at Mrs. Doolittle’s Restaurant (European dishes, sandwiches, drinks, and other specialties from Holland).

Day 3: SLAVE CASTLE & RETURN TO ACCRA

After breakfast at the hotel, we will journey back to Accra with a possible stop at a slave castle along the way.
